The New Atonement

Once when you wanted to atone for some sin you had committed or some wrong you had done, it was called your “Come to Jesus” moment. The idea being you confess, cast your sins before Jesus and ask forgiveness.

Seems today when an ex-member of this administration wants to atone for something they have done, it is their “Go to a book publisher” moment. The idea is that you confess, cast your sins on paper and then ask people to pay you in order to read about them.

Funny, that? Right. I mean it does intrigue me that if you really fuck up, choose poorly and then want to justify yourself... Screw the mea culpa moment.

And despite my own spiritual choices, I could care less if one went to Jesus, Buddha or the dry cleaners.

What I would like to see it a bit of humility. Which is coincidentally something I posted about yesterday.

And I gave that asshat Greenspan a free pass for not calling him out as one of the less humble.

I suppose this book thing has its merits... No self reflection, no big apology and potentially big bucks.

Oh how these people annoy me.

It's a shame Greenspan and Colin Powell didn't "confess their war sins" and seek atonement while they were enabling Bush and his war.

Ah, the "Spin to Cash" moment ... does it really have anything to do with atonement?

Interesting how they can now say that decisions made were incorrect, and now that they've atoned all is forgiven? Perhaps a bit of this new found clarity might have been expressed back at the point where it might have made a difference. I don't forgive THAT easily.

Atonement? Naw, just another way to get some people to part with their $$$$ to build the authors bank account up some more! ; (

Who would've thought they could get away with it yet again??????

I would be embarrassed to admit my failure and enabling of Bush's disastrous presidency. Well, maybe for enough money.

Well if we the American public didnt pay the price for the books they couldn't kick us in the butt once again!
Plus to me it doesn't absolve them at all! they should still have to pay for their mistakes!

Hell...look at all the Watergate criminals that are living high on book deals and being interviewed on all the talk shows, as if they weren't part of the whole thing.

That's why we have to drag them all into the courts and try the bastards, so that noone in their right minds will try this again.

Blame Albert Speer. He wrote Inside the Third Reich while in prison after WWII and started the trend.

A horrible coincidence of history, all these sycophants gather in one administration, do their misdeeds, and then suddenly come back with perfect hindsight. They should hang their heads in shame rather than seek the spotlight to sell their books. In my perfect world, they would all be shunned and perhaps made to wear the new Scarlet Letter W.

It's typical of today's politicians and other media celebs to say "I take full responsibility!" but not actually take full ANYTHING, other than more helpings at the trough. These people don't even know what atonement is; they don't feel they've done anything wrong, EVER.

W is the perfect archetype of the bloated, stupid, arrogant pig American, and everyone who serves/served under him is equally liable in my book for all the shit he's done. Like Robin Andrea says, throw the book at 'em and let 'em rot in the country's toughest jails. Maybe THEN they'll learn what atonement really means.

atonement. ha! reminds me of going to confession. what a joke. how about trying to do the right thing to begin with, instead of needing "do overs"??
humans are a pathetic lot sometimes...especially the ones in d.c. they can apologize for the rest of their lives-i won't forgive or forget. why? because it was clear (to some of us) what the agenda was, long before he was "elected" the first time.

I would agree with SB Gypsy, we should have them all in front of a jury by way of a night in jail before they can bond out. Book deals and any other money made on said criminal activities should be given to the courts for the hurt they have inflicted on this country.

I know what a great idea!
What on earth did prominent members of "society" do in times past before massmarket press/publishing/electronic media distribution of their rank old dirty laundry?
How on earth did such people pay the bills?!?

oh, prostitution, probably

I so dislike politics no matter what the party is because the social landscape they have helped mold of late is just awful. I have never seen the corporate world as cruel and uncaring as it is today. No one answers telephone calls and it is depersonalizing. Media has it's share of blame. So do these terrible politicians from both sides of the aisle. I can only hope for a brighter day!

Lola, Woody and Bobby got a paying gig and are gone for a while.

Meanwhile I got sidetracked without them and have been posting at my new site, Confessions of a Stunt Bride.
I hope they come home soon.

Seems to be that's the only way we get the truth these days.
In America under George W. Bush and his ilk, truth is like cable/satellite television... you can get it for a price.

Truth. Pay for it now, we'll give it to you later.

Problem is that many people buy these books. Doesn't say much about their intelligence, does it?
