Declare them “Terrorist”, then what and why?

If the US government declares the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a “terrorist” organization does that then open the door to bombing Iran under the name of fighting the war on terror? Is that the reason for doing this? If not, why do it?

“If imposed, the declaration would signal a more confrontational turn in the administration’s approach to Iran and would be the first time that the United States has added the armed forces of any sovereign government to its list of terrorist organizations.”

Could it be that Cheney and Rove disagreed over doing this?
“But in recent months, there has been resurgent debate within the administration about whether the diplomatic path is working, with aides to Vice President Dick Cheney said to be among those pushing for greater consideration of military options.”

Rove’s job was to protect the president’s reputation and his party’s as well. Perhaps Rove realized that to attack Iran right now was not going to sit well with the majority of his party and surely would do nothing for the president’s already dismal legacy. Did Rove offer bush an ultimatum and bush sided with Cheney?

You know, POP, you're probably right. None of the other explanations of Rove's departure satisfied me, but a power struggle between he and Cheney? I like it. Rove probably figured he'd get blamed for orchestrating the "Iran Option" so he got outta Dodge.

It is likely about using the 2002 Authorization of Force as the basis for bombing Iran. If the bring Iran under the terrorism umbrella, the Authorization applies.

None of the explanations make sense. I'm no longer surprised by how much idiocy this adminstration can produce.

Attacking Iran, with a resources already stretched too thin, would be political, diplomatic, international and economic suicides for the U.S.

I no longer have any doubt. George W. Bush and his criminal friends have done more damage to the U.S. then the terrorists could ever hope to have done. And he will retire with a huge pension and 200 bodyguards - that is not acceptable - he needs to be tried as a war criminal and spend the rest of his life confined to a prison, with a couple of minimum wage guards and a cellmate who thinks he's cute.

If you look at the definition of terrorism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism

then you might just as easily define our activities in Iraq as such. If we declare the Army of Iran a terrorist organization then they have every justification in declaring ours one as well.

You are on to something here PoP.

Cheney will stop at nothing. It is odd to consider that Rove actually might.

I asked myself a similar question yesterday morning. If W had to obey either Cheney or Rove, I think there would be no contest. I think W is frightened to death of Cheney (so am I, actually.) For someone no brighter than W, the happenings around him must seem as mysterious as a visit from the tooth fairy—make that saber-toothed fairy.

Interesting question, PoP. This administration never ceases to amaze me. There seems to be no other reason for the terrorist designation other than an inherent desire to make more war. Why does Cheney want war with Iran? Is it because Iran stands to benefit from our blunder in Iraq and be the true victor and owner of all that oil? It would be interesting if there is a developing schism between the Rove Republicans and the Cheney Republicans.

They are paving the way for the next admin., dem or repub to carry the water for the neo-cons. Dennis Kucinich called it correctly when he said the DNLC and the neo-cons are one and the same. I am so pessimistic about the future of this world. All of the Obama and Hillary fans need to listen closely to their language.

I can't see a guy like Rove resigning on principle. Maybe he did. But I don't buy that yet. I think Rove just doesn't want to go down with ship.

No matter how Bush and Cheney parse it, attacking Iran will be a grotesquely massive mistake. Our military is already handicapped thanks to Bush & Co.'s war of choice in Iraq, and there's a chance that the Iranians, if attacked, will hand our soldiers their asses back.

I keep wondering how much of Cheney's war on terror belief stem from his five-deferments chickenhawk status. I wonder the same about Bush, too, though he isn't quite as much of a chickenhawk -- he actually wore a National Guard uniform for a while. But his daddy got him that gig, and he just couldn't stay that course from start to finish, so he has a similar, if weaker, chickenhawk scent. As if the war on terror is their way of exorcizing whatever Vietnam-era demons have been living in their heads for thirty-odd years...

We can't let them do it. We simply cannot allow them to start another fucking war!

Enough is goddamned enough!

Sorry PoP, but I cannot believe we are even talking about this. It's like we're living in one of Salvador Dali's movies.

Interesting thought about Rove, but to be honest-I don't think Rove gives two hoots about us going to war in Iran or what is going on in Iraq.IMO, he cares about one thing, and that's power, especially his own. I think it's more likely he left because now that things are falling to pieces, he wants to get out of the way so he doesn't go down with the ship. He's more about politics than policy, IMO.

I am not so sure about the power struggle idea...I think it is more a struggle with Rove vs Gonzo...Rove has never gotten along with cheney- that would not be new...and about Iran, have we heard anyone else (besides Cheney) speak about Iran? The Defense Dept or Gates ? Now I do admit a part of me is very worried that the WH ( Bush) would love to have a distraction before the Surge report on the 15th...

And the 500 dead in Iraq yesterday- that is being called an act of terrorism- not what it really is- Genocide...

I wonder how many of the WH are sick of the Terra Labeling....( and I do fear CM is right)

PoP, here's what i think they're up to. Condi-lousy Rice informed the UN that, unless they embark on tougher sanctions against Iran, the US may be forced to take unilateral action. I think this is an attempt to blackmail the UN into acceding to Bush's demands.

Surely, there must be SOMEONE that can stop Cheney. He's obviously mad with power. This is insanity of the highest order.
Somehow, we need to stop the war machine that has become America. Cheney does it to enrich himself and his cronies... but I think he's going to far. More Americans will die to make this man rich.
And...um... I'll stop calling you shirley. :)

I’ll add my third and fourth cents worth today: If Cheney, the neo-cons, whoever, seriously wants to go to war with Iran, I don’t know how they could expect to do it conventionally. Even if the draft is reinstated, a WWII style mobilization seems very unlikely for such an unpopular venture.

Hopefully I’m just being paranoid, but it has crossed my mind that if the world can be made dangerous enough, Americans might not find martial law completely unpalatable. Like I said, hopefully I’m just being paranoid.

If Ms. Rice or Mr. Gates bows out in the next year or so, I may start to worry indeed. I actually caught myself yesterday sincerely hoping that nothing happens to W.

Your assessment (of why Cheney left) is the most common sense I've read so far. As for declaring a part, or all of the Iranian Army "Terrorists" - it's a PR move. Who can be against fighting terrorists? It's becoming apparent that attacking Iran is on the Bush schedule. My question is: what the hell will he attack them WITH? He's destroyed our standing forces!

I become more and more fearful each passing day, that come November 08, martial law will be imposed, and there will be no elections.

POP
I talked about this yesterday and here is a small part of my thoughts and remember, there are 125'000 Revolutionary guard.
Bush now has his excuse to start further instigation with Iran and he is getting closer to attacking them as he has wanted from the beginning.
That was only one of the many reasons for attacking Iraq to get our military in the middle east and he will stay in the middle of all this until he can further his middle east order.
He is also keeping Al Qaeda alive as a focal point for us all the while we are giving Saudi Arabia multiple Billions in Arms that we sooner or later will be facing as Saudi Arabia is accused of aiding Al Qaeda and Sunni insurgents.
I expected this from the very beginning but I do not like what I am seeing as excuses are made or found whatever the case may be "because we cannot trust anyone at all", to further this still just developing middle east chaos so Bush can impliment what he thinks will be his new order.
Despite what I fear is going to happen in 2008 I do not see success in the middle east and this whole mess there and around the world is just getting under way.
