Backyard Daycare
I guess the neighborhood birds think my backyard is a good place to bring their kids during the day. It appears they drop them off here and go about their bird business.
We have a pair of sparrows with six little ones and in the morning the whole family shows up but by about ten o’clock the parents are nowhere to be seen. The little ones spend the day hopping around in the gardenia bush and feeding at the feeders. Same situation for the cardinal family. They leave their little ones to peck around under the big sea grape bushes.
There is something kind of wonderful about feeling that the birds find my backyard safe enough to trust me with their brand new little ones.

How's Fred with all this?
They know Fred's inside.
Over here, the neighborhood cats all stop and check out the yard to see if Shayna is out before they cross it.
There has been some sort of truce between Marnie and Hitchcock and the birds that live in the tree.
My two cats used to sit under the tree and stare up. This Spring, they prefer the new lawn chair pads.
I like the lawn chairs because it makes me feel the cats are safer from the damn hawks... who are way too bold.
