What the Hell?

Someone please explain this to me. For eight years the Democrats in the Senate folded to bush for just about everything he asked for. Now that we have a Democratic President they are saying no to his request for money to close down Gitmo. What the hell is going on?

Fear.

With a good number of those detainees' charges being dropped, they still have nowhere to go... but they are still considered enemy combatants, yet their charges have been dropped, but are still considered dangerous even though there is no proof to the allegations that they did anything, so we'll hold them because they have nowhere to go, but if we release them to US prisons they are dangerous even though there is no proof that they did anything so fear them fear them fear them fear them fear them fear them fear them...

Oh, it's politics. No representative wants to be known as the Congressman/Senator (whatever) that allowed terrorists in his state.

Fear. Politics. It's like Republicans... only it's Democrats, too.

My name is Targa and I approve this nonsense.

Agree, POP. Deplorable vote. The Dems could work for another avenue for handling those who cannot be convicted but are deemed a risk to release. (Recent study: 1 of 7 returns to insurgent activity.)

Dems too are political animals, and more disappointing in these matters because many of them can see the 2 or more sides to an issue. Most politicians are frequently without courage; often NOT making the hard choices they promise each campaign ad season. They wait for the wind to change and act when they can do so without personal peril.

Targa: great analysis, and spot on.

On related subterranean critter news: we have a bumper crop of cicada shells in Northern Virginia. Hundreds emerged last week -- have yet to see a live or flying cicada yet -- don't know where they lurk in between ascending from the earth and beginning their symphony later in the season.

Left a garden rake out last night. Cicada shell affixed to it this morning. They are still emerging.

What does it look like in your neck of the woods?

FEAR THE PERSON WHO IS NOT EXACTLY LIKE ME!

add to that --
1] let one person go
2]an attack happens at any time in the future
3]the rethugs point to anyone who voted to close gitmo and yells, "Gotcha!"

The whole thing is a big NIMBY issue. The Dems who voted against closing Gitmo are afraid if any of them were brought to their state for imprisonment their opposition would use it as an election year issue to get them voted out. Basically they're cowards.

There's a stickier issue with bringing them to the States.

They'd be entitled to a trial.

Trials invite media attention.

Trials produce disclosure.

Disclosure may reveal details that our politicians don't want released.

It's safer for the politicians to sentence a person to life in prison without a conviction, than to have a lot of unpleasant information leaked to the press.

We bought a lot of these human beings for a million dollars each. Those that sold them into slavery, probably don't want them coming back, in case they wish to seek retribution.
