Disappointment

I am deeply and sadly disappointed in the President’s decision to allow offshore exploration for oil off the east coast of the US and even more wells in the Gulf of Mexico. Aside from the environmental impacts, which I have no reason to believe there won’t be, there is also the hurricane factors. If you look at the travel history of hurricanes, almost every one that has hit the US has traveled through the very areas designated for drilling.

I know the President never completely ruled out the possibility of offshore drilling during his campaign, I just never believed that he would completely rule it in.

that was my initial reaction, too. i've been hearing so much analysis that I'm beginning to move to the camp that believes the drilling will end up not being viable. but he will have one GOP support for other areas of his energy bill proposal.

this is why I loath politics.....playing poker with our natural resources could lead to environmental disaster. but then again, we get our oil from countries who dirty up their environment -- and that seems to be acceptable. So now I'm rethinking yet again...and so early in the morning.

I thought for once we weren't settling for the lesser of two evils in this last election. So far, a little disappointed.

PoP, we're hugely upset here in the Keys, too. The Gulf loop current ensures that anything spilled in the East Gulf will be brought along the Keys by the Gulf Stream. And the easternmost area in the Gulf he's opening to drilling is a scant 30 miles from the NO FISHING zone around the Dry Tortugas. Too sensitive to allow fishing, but oil drilling is OK? While some improvements have been made in the oil industry, spills and accidents are inevitable.

He's trying to get Repub support for his climate change proposals (which ain't gonna happen - the current batch of Repubs won't go for even their OWN ideas if Obama gives them a nod) by advocating more fossil fuel use, when that is what we need to wean ourselves from.

PoP, are you on the coast? Which coast?

And Professor Chaos, disappointed here, too.
