Cokie and Irony

Well, at least we all have the relief of knowing that Cokie Roberts is aware that Hawaii is a state. Of course it is a little foreign and exotic for her and she can’t understand why Obama went there to visit his grandmother, the lady who raised him, when it would have looked a lot better if Obama had vacationed in Myrtle Beach. Senator Obama’s grandmother doesn’t live in Myrtle Beach, but you know, it would have looked better.

Didn’t Cokie write a book once about mothers? Let’s see, I believe it was called, “Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation” So now she’s criticizing Senator Obama for visiting the woman who raised him?

McCain has EIGHT homes?!?

That's his personal business, but the level of hypocrisy from the anti-Obama side is extraordinary.

Why do they spend so much time bashing the other guy, don't they have any issues to campaign with?

i refused to read the book because i figured that it would have a right wing propagandist slant to it. my friend owns it though. she's a bit slow in the head. no, i don't believe that they do have anything with which to campaign because people are waking up to the fact that republicans equal regression instead of progression. unfortunately, so do democrats. sigh. i hope sheehan kicks pelosi's ass in the election.

Yeah, but Obama's mom was a foreign Muslim party commissar SS officer, so you can understand Cokie's concern for the future of America.

And if he never went to visit his grandmother?

Well, Cokie Roberts would claim that Obama had no morals and hated mothers and apple pie.

The man cannot win with the media. If he wins at all, it will despite the media.

The right is going to put down everything Obama says or does right or wrong! It does not matter where he vacations but I do think his wife is capable of taking care of the kids and if he knew what was good for him he would get back here and soon.
McCain is taking over as President already and shoring up his experience in security and world issues while Obama is out of the picture on vacation! It does not look right and McCain is in front of reporters right now taking fool advantage!

Thank Gord we have Cokie looking out for Barack! Visiting your family and friends for vacation is so elitist, elitism being something she abhors.

I'm glad she suggested he spend his time vacationing in a nice, family friendly locale that represents the best in American values.

On second thought, maybe she meant McCain.

It's not just The Right. The media live on conflict, so they are trying to make it look like a close race, which right now it isn't.

Personally, I will keep track of the electoral college trends using my own do-it-yourself methods after the conventions are over. Until then, it's just noise.

Dr. Zaius, not only is Cokie indeed a poo-poo head, I declare to also be a doofus. PoP and Dcup, I think you are right in pointing out Cokie's contradictions as you do.

We do need to share this vital bit of information with many of our geography-challenged brothers and sisters, many of whom just happen to be conservatives: Hawaii is part of the United States of America, lots of Americans vacations live there, and quite a few Americans LIVE there, too! Maybe going to Hawaii isn't all that different from going to Sedona, AZ for some time off.

Nick is right, if McCain has so many homes, how can he and his campaign call Obama an "elitist"?

Also, I have to wonder, how can McCain's cruising through a Navy career based on his family name not amount to "elitism"? I guess the Dems can't pound him on that one, because in the current climate (and with them allowing the GOP to frame all of our national debate) it would be political suicide to be critical of a "war hero" or of anything military...

But I think the Dems can hammer him on his homes and be safe. Sure, it's McCain's right to purchase as many homes as he wants, but if things get really down and dirty (keep your eyes and ears open, the Swift Boat people are back!) why wouldn't it be o.k. for the Dems to run an ad that shows pictures of McCain's homes with graphics showing their price tags, with the usual ominous music and voice-over saying "John McCain calls Barack Obama an 'elitist', yet McCain..." etc. "When Barack Obama went to Hawaii, he went to see his grandmother, the woman who raised him. When John McCain vacations, he goes to his own $6 million home in sunny Arizona."

Would that be taking "the low road"? Maybe. But sometimes I just get pissed off enough that I think maybe the Dems need to take a page or two out of the GOP playbook, and just bury the jerks.

I used to respect McCain -- until he redefined 'torture'.
I used to respect Colin Powell -- until he sold his soul to Bush and Cheney.
I used to respect Cokie -- when she confined herself to NPR and talking sense. Alas, those days are obviously behind her.

Hawaii became a state a half-century ago, Cokie! Where have YOU been?
I don't know where Myrtle Beach is. I
can find Hawaii on a map -- on my first try.

otoh, I perceive Martha's Vineyard as being very exotic. and I know Bush 41 among lots of other presidents and candidates have gone there.

it's too bad Obama's grandma doesn't live in a shack in Iowa, I guess. but, if she did, the MSM would've said he was pandering to the midwest.

Is Cokie a joke or what?

I'd say "get a life" but she already has one, she doesn't realize that everybody else does too.

If Obama had gone to Myrtle Beach, Cokie would be whining that he was leaving his poor, elderly grandmother alone in Hawaii. You can't please some of these professional chatterers.
