Gut feelings

Here’s the way it looks to me. Unless someone or something drastically changes, the republican presidential nominee will be John McCain and most likely, as I have been saying for a long time, Joe Lieberman will be tapped as his running mate.

Why McCain? Because basically, he is all the Republicans have left. Let’s just say at this point he looks to be the sanest one running amongst a lineup of bizarre folks. Even though most Republicans strongly disagree with his stance on immigration, I think they might hold their noses and vote for him.

I’m sure there are better Republicans out there who would make a much better candidate for their party but they are sitting this one out for at least two reasons. First, whomever becomes the next president will have a humongous pile of problems to deal with, thanks to the crimes and errors of the present administration. Second, it seems a strong wind might be blowing in the Democrats favor.

Should Hillary become the Democrat’s nominee, I fear the Republicans won’t have to hold their noses as tight as they come out in large numbers, not to vote so much for McCain, but to vote against Hillary.

POP

you nailed it -- McCain has sat back and let the others do all the dirty work -- they made him look normal and sane.

and now Huckabee -- the most insane of them all --- he makes McCain look like Albert Schweitzer. What is interesting is how Romney stepped right into the Huckapoo trap -- giving more of an edge to McCain

as for Lieberman -- he helped lose an election for Gore, he can now help lose an election for McCain. Unless Hillary gets the nod --- she will be the uniting factor for the GOP. But i truly think she has jumped the shark

oh those white 'racist' republicans --- they are gonna have a jew or a woman or a black or a man who loves those brown people or a mormon or an i-talian.

they have to be going NUTS!

Great post, as usual PoP!

I had not thought of this angle, but as Dcap says, you are onto something.

Imagine- making McCain look good? They are all whacked out in my estimation.

Will he choose Lieberman? I can taste the throw up in my mouth.

One thing is true... If Hillary gets the nomination, then the Repubs will unite to make sure that she is not elected.

While I would never vote for a Republican, I can't stomach Hillary either. Her ick factor is just too high for me. But since I live in a so called red state with a late primary and we have the stupid electoral college, really it doesn't matter what I think or who I vote for. It really pisses me off that no matter what democrat runs, my vote never counts. If you ask me, that is totally screwed. I think I will have a pity party because that just makes me want to give up altogether.

I don't know who the heck I'm going to vote for. I don't like anyone in either party.

Good guess PoP and probably a likely scenario. I for one wouldn't care to be the next president. It is a huge mess and it won't be easy to clean up. People aren't going to like the fact that they will have to pay for Shrub's war on top of the high prices for oil and everything else. It is going to be especially painful on top of the recession.

Takes a lot to make McCain look sane in the brain. I think there's a poem in there somewhere. And don't worry folks, once the nukes start a flyin', all we'll have to worry about it a little bit o' radiation.

I'm with Pineapple. Living here in Shrub-land, my vote doesn't frikking count which totally pisses me off.

That is sad to think that a 71 year old ex-POW of nearly 6 years is sane. Any way that we approach this, the next 4 years after Shrub aren't going to be much better than his regime have been.

Uh uh, I think McCain will chose Huckabee if nominated.

And, is Mitt Romney really a person?

What a mess. What an utter mess.

Down here, there are Hannity billboards with "Stop Hillary" emblazened across them in huge letters.

She might just be the uniter the repubs are looking for.

POP-
Great post, as always. I was listening to the radio station that Rush Limbaugh is on in our area and they were just drooling at the endorsement of Lieberman. They interviewed Holy Joe and he said that he was supporting McCain because he's the only one who will fight the "Militant Muslims" and make our world safe. Joe is hoping for a world war to rid it of all Arabs, I have no doubt.

I agree, Huckabee is dangerous and a McCain/Lieberman candidacy is equally scary. I have no doubt, if facing Hillary, we could lose this race. I'm hoping that those who are supporting Hillary realize this. What drives me crazy is speaking to my brother who lives in Nevada and he said Nevada is crazy for Hillary (and so is he). The problem is, he doesn't really look into what she is saying. He doesn't even have a computer so he's basing his information solely on the newspapers who are dishing out Hillary propaganda. He was shocked that I wouldn't vote for a woman, as if the issues don't count! Obviously he doesn't know me as much as he thinks. If he were here, I would have slapped him right upside the head!

The results of my informal survey in this small farming community I live in are as follows:

People are going to go out in droves to vote against Hillary. They don't really care who the Republicans nominate, they are going to vote for them.

The Republicans predicted this some time ago, and I fear that for once, they might be right.

I had the same thoughts, PoP. I said to roger yesterday that it will be interesting to see McCain rise up out of the ashes. He has been polling very low, but suddenly he has three newspaper endorsements. He is the only "electable" republican in the bunch, and that's not saying much. He just has to sit back and let the republican machinery do the work for him. They don't want the preacher or the Mormon, and Rudy has crashed and burned. I'm not sure why Lieberman felt like he had to endorse McCain, but that was a rather interesting, stomach-turning spectacle.

Yeah, I thought McCain was still pretty much swirling down the drain. The lack of any genuine not-insane competition is quite amazing.

Agree that Hillary is the wrong kind of uniter. More than a year ago, Arianna Huffington was on Colbert and it went something like:

Colbert: Can Hillary win?
Huff: No. And if the Democrats nominate her, they have a death wish.

Agreed with her then. Still do.

I agree with you. McCain will be the choice. Also if Clinton is the Dems choice, wingers will climb out of the woodwork to vote against her.

Here's the really SCARY part: McCain croaks while in office and overnight you have...(drumroll please) President Lieberman!!!!!

We gotta stop taking this so seriously...it's completely f#$&ed, but the only way to defeat the bastards is with venomous ridicule.

I'm hoping Obama will be the nominee, not Sen. Clinton.

Not that it will really matter, though, because as I've said before, there may be another 9/11 event, or a near miss before the election, and the Republicans take the Whitehouse.

I was saying McCain / Lieberman last year, just to annoy my Republican neighbor and friend!

But the real question is, who is Deibold voting for?

I don't think so. If it is and there are elections we will defeat them. Mccain has alienated many independent whjo onc thought of him as a hero and Lieberman has pissed off most independents and many democrats who will all work against them. I happen to hate Romney as I am from Mass and he is an underhanded Bush wanabe but I think he will get the nomination. Anyway you look at it if Giulliani doesn't get it and keep following this misagenda something drastic is going to happen like an Iran attack allowing Bush TO STAY IN AND FIGHT HIS CREATED FOREVER WARS.

yeah, you hit the nail on the head with the McCain issue. It probably helps that all the Repubs are complete nutjobs, including McCain.

Who knows? With a few more months with McCain leading, maybe they will boost Ron Paul up or even Fred Thompson...lol

I can only hope that the same thing happens to the wondertwins, Barack and Hillary.

Edwards 08!

Oh Pop, from your mouth to God's ears--we can only hope that a miracle happens and someone (Edwards?) who at least PRETENDS to care about us little people is elected. I don't think Hillary has thought even for a second about what her future will be like if/when the reich unites against her and steals/wins the election. She will be the brunt of jokes for decades to come. Scary.

A very possible scenario, PoP. McCain does indeed start to look like the only one that makes sense for them. And of course Hillary will mobilize their base no matter who is running against her.
