Betcha didn’t expect to see this

Back during my days of working for the local wildlife hospital I raised this opossum from a tiny orphan. She was an educational animal and I would take her to schools to show kids that they were truly valuable little creatures. The kids would be afraid of her at first but she won over their hearts every time.

She was gentle as a lamb and would let anyone pet her and hold her. I never bathed her, didn’t have to, she was a stickler for keeping herself clean and tidy.

One Christmas a pet supply store here advertised they would make a Santa available to have his picture taken with your pet. So I decided to take my gentle TCO (pronounced “tee-coe”) to visit Santa.

I put her in her carrier, the size you would use for a small dog, and off we went. We had to wait in a short line as other regular pets posed with the old guy. Finally our turn came. I put the carrier on the floor, opened its door and took TCO out. Santa was a lot surprised but a great sport.

As you can see from the photo, TCO was more interested in exploring than she was in having her photo taken. The first time Santa tried to hold her, she became very inquisitive about his hair and almost exposed that indeed, Santa was wearing a wig.

That's the most inquisitive possum I've ever seen. What a sweetie, and kudos to you for the rescue and rehab!

Oh my- that is just too cute. My stepdaughter will love seeing this photo.

The animals have many lessons for us if only we would pay attention.

And clearly one is - watch out for those storefront Santas!

Seriously though- I love that you did this, it shows (not that I ever doubted it) a person of great compassion and care, a person of integrity.

Animals will put up with no other.

Thanks PoP. Between this and the comment you just left on my blog, I can see you are in a different, and good place this week. Which delivers some much needed inspiration to me.

(p.s. but how did Fred the Cat take it when you came home reeking of opossom??? jealous i would imagine!)

You're full of surprises PoP. Cute little fellow. I don't have much experience with these guys other that they steal a lot of bird feed along with their buddies the raccoons.

Wow she is beautiful!

My naughty dog tried to carry an opossum he caught in the yard into my house this fall, which was thankfully playing dead.

They are mysterious and undervalued creatures - thank you for bringing them to light through education.

Don't mean to be the only one to throw the negative juju out, but ICK! Possums just creep me out, what with the scant hair, the freaky rat tail, and the hissing. OOooggghhhhh....

sorry!

That is just precious! I love the wildlife educational visits to the schools. If children are raised to understand animals and their habitat's, maybe they would be more respectful as they grow up and become adults.

#1: Oooh, find! I finally got bright enough to click YOUR NAME upon reading the probably 500th comment from you on C&L that got my attention. You has a blog!

Seriously, I rarely post there, read the comments when I can, and invariably those with your nym attached just leap out.

#2: I'll save my family 'possum story for another time.

ah!!! this is so adorable!! Stella isn't too fond of possums (she's had a few run-ins in our--or HER--back yard), but even she thinks that this is one cool picture!

It kind of makes me feel guilty about the year that I talked my sister out of taking her 22 pet mice to have their pics taken with Santa...

Too darned cute!! I love possums. Funny thing is, I did the same thing with Santa's beard once when I was a little kid, got my hands all tangled up in it. That's when I learned the word "fiberglass"

I'm glad you specified it was a pet. Otherwise, I might have viewed it as an over-sized mouse for lunch. ;-)

How absolutely marvelous! I think possums are wonderful. Many years ago when I was living in a converted garage/studio, I shared the space with two very young possums; their antics were wonderful.

What a gorgeous creature.
