I used to not ever worry about things like that. Now that Bush and his lunatic league of hunchmen have control, I find that scenario plausible, and it wouldn't surprise me if something happened, they cancel the next election, and they declare Marshal Law. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

The terrorists win. Bush handed them victory long ago, and his actions only serve to make them stronger. What a phony!

Knee jerk reaction is prayer first then realy find out what all the fuss is about. all the cursing, shaking of fists doesnt accomplish anything. AS united citizens we must continue to be united! Even if it takes getting rid of George and his cronies!

Seriously, I have no idea what we would do. The thought of it is sickening. I'm not sure there is enough military presence in the US to do very much, and I'm not sure those that are here would be so inclined. I would hope for a coup followed immediately by elections.

My question is this: Why are you asking this as a hypothetical? It has already happened, nearly six years ago.

The USA PATRIOT Act, the Military Commissions Act, and dozens of signing statements handing virtually unlimited authority to pResident Bush (or Cheney if Bush happens to be in the can, which coincidentally he always is when a real decision is made) are already in effect. The Constitution is in tatters, checks and balances have long been rendered ineffective.

The thing about martial law is, it's easier to implement if you don't actually declare it openly.

I wish I didn’t think it was possible, but given what I’ve watched since 2001, I can’t put it past Cheney to try. Don’t know what I’d do. I more worried about what some other people would do: like the Supreme Court justices, the joint-chiefs, members of congress, state governors and mayors.

In an effort to pick a fight with the alarmist orthodoxy, I’ll list a few reasons to be optimistic:
1. Gates is at Defense and not Rumsfeld.
2. I think there are still a number of Republican senators (at least) who will balk.
3. Although military officers are deeply loyal to the service, they took an oath to defend the Constitution , and I expect their education anticipated the possibility of constitutional crisis.
4. Condoleezza Rice is just waiting to rediscover the content of her character. She claims to have been born in Alabama.
5. I think Justice Kennedy might shift the majority on something this important.
Just so nobody gets too relaxed:
1. I might be wrong about Justice Kennedy.
2. After September 11, I was taken aback by the willingness of many—maybe most—Americans to cede their civil liberties in exchange for some perceived protection from assault.
3. Alberto Gonzalez, Mike McConnell , Stephen Cambone, idiot Democrats who are too lazy to read the legislation they vote on and too spineless to stand for anything other than reelection, Rupert Murdock , AIPAC, and Dick Cheney.
4. Did I mention Dick Cheney?

I'm with the "head for the hills" crowd. I don't own guns, and I wouldn't want to fight the govt/police/etc. who'd take over. I would just pack all the food I could, find a quiet place in a remote wood, pitch my tent, and start building a greenhouse so my family could eat in the winter. I can only hope this option will be available to us.

If Martial Law was ever declared, some of the first people rounded up would be the progressive bloggers and peace activists. They know we won't remain silent, so they will take us away or suspend internet use. Maybe we need a FEMA plan too (Freedom Evacuation Meeting Agenda). I will not be at all surprised if Martial Law isn't imposed - probably soon after we bomb Iran.

Also, I thought I would stop by and let you know that your blog was one of the featured spots on the very first BWR at my new place. Drop by any time!

Do you want to destroy the hold that corporations have over congress and the president? Simple. Organize and Demand progressive legislation from some of these corporations and do not buy from them until they get the GOP to get congress to enact this legislation.

If you want to put an end to the Republiklan party, then

Send this letter to the Republican party now! Also put this on your web page so others can see it.

Copy and paste the letter below and email it directly to info@gop.com the Republican Party and get 2 friends to send this letter and have those 2 friends get 2 friends to send it and so on. Thank you. Drop me a message to info@dmocrats.org with the subject Done after you have sent the email.

Hello

Get your Republican party to end the war in Iraq, with Bush and Cheney resigning, and until you do we stop buying televisions, refrigerators, stoves, ovens, dishwashers, dvd players, stereo equipment, light bulbs from one of your party's major contributors and War contractors General Electric Corporation ( 203 373 2211 ) who cannot afford to lose a large sector of the publics business and money.

Get your Republican party to remove the FICA taxable income cap and tax all of a person's income for social security purposes and enact HR 676 Single payer universal health care into law and repeal Medicare Part D and place the prescription drug benefit in Medicare Part B covering 80 percent of all medication with no extra premiums, no extra deductibles, no means tests, no coverage gaps, and completely remove the means test to Medicare Part B and until you do, we will not buy consumer products and prescription drugs from one of the biggest pharmacy chains and GOP contributors in the country, Rite Aid, who cannot afford to lose a large sector of the publics business and money.

Get your Republican party to enact a $10 an hour minimum wage, and until you do, we will not go to the following restaurants and GOP contributors Wendy's, Outback Steakhouse, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and Dominos Pizza who cannot afford to lose a large sector of the publics business and money.

Get your Republican party to enact into law Universal vote by mail with paper ballots counted by civil servants with civil servants registering voters and keeping track of registrations, and until you do, we will not buy any GOP contributor Dell computers or monitors or go to the following restaurants and GOP contributors Wendy's, Outback Steakhouse, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and Dominos Pizza who cannot afford to lose a large sector of the publics business and money.

Get your Republican party to get congress to pass and enact a law legalizing abortions from conception to six months, and to nine months when the life of the mother appears threatened, and until you do we stop doing business with two of your biggest contributors Dominos Pizza and Curves for Women Health Clubs.

Bush has already eroded decades (if not centuries) of common law protection and human rights (not just abroad, but for Americans too).

You're right though...a significant event and the spooks will rule the day.

Interesting how in Britain (where more acts of violence have occurred, even if smaller), they have moved to 'criminal' language, away from 'terrorist' language. And they don't panic or freak overnight. Maybe it's because they had the hell bombed out of them in WWII - 911 would have been one bad night of many. Americans have exported violence, but since the Civil War have not seen it in their streets...

Utter lack of surprise. And, oh yeah, frustration. OTOH, I wake up every day, realize that sentiment for impeachment isn't gaining traction and am totally frustrated. What Michael Vick did was horrible, but it pales in comparison with the crimes of Cheney/Bush. Not even on the same planet. OTOH, had Vick been white and done the same thing, everyone would be crying out for "understanding" and a spirit of forgivenes. The divides in U.S. society are huge and seem beyond repair in the near future. Martial law would be just another annoyance.

JG.
