Damned Paparazzi

Okay, who told them where we would be?

Just teasing but kinda not. See, Mr. Pop went to north Florida to update the volunteer turtle patrol on any new or different procedures. These are people who go out on the beach very early each morning during the turtle nesting season to keep track of which species of sea turtle nested where.

Also, while we were there tropical storm Andrea did a number on the local beaches with the unusually high tides and giant waves. There may have been a heavy loss of this seasons preexisting sea turtle nests due to these conditions and the overwash of the nests.

The Orlando TV station discovered that Mr. Pop was in a nearby coastal town and called him to talk to about the beach erosion and how it would effect the turtle nests. They asked if he would meet them on the beach for an interview. As you can see by the second picture, he obliged their request. We don’t know if this interview actually aired because while it was being conducted, only a couple of miles up the beach, sadly, a surfer met his death. The waves were just too strong for the surfer to escape their power.

With the heavy smoke from all the forest fires hanging in the air, the winds from the storm ripping up the surf and the sand, and then the tragic death of the surfer, it wasn’t the trip we had envisioned.

Oh, the beach picture I posted on Tuesday, was a picture of the beach just a couple of miles from my home and it was taken last Sunday. Maybe what they say is true, there really is no place like home.

I am sorry to hear about the sea turtles and the surfer. I wonder if we are in for a particularly bad hurricance season?

BTW, I posted a pic of "evil Fred".

Glad you made it home safe and sound. I was wondering if you were affected by all the smoke. It's been intense down here off and on. Today is on - cough.

The way this is starting out it doesn't look good for the summer. In a report yesterday NASA said that we here in Atlanta could expect to highs in the 110 degree range this summer. Sorry you little holiday was less than spectacular.

That storm was so early this year, like a pre-season event. Those poor turtles and all that hard work to get their nests ready. I can't help but think that these conditions are related to global climate change.

At least with looming climate change and all, Eyewitness News is now in HD.

When it finally airs, the interview will look spectacular.

Well, Robin said it. Storms early because of climate change.

So many how many species of turtle did show up? Might be interesting to see what this one storm may have done to their future.

Hope y'all got some relaxation anyhow, and that Murphy's "checkup" went well. (And that no one's suing Fred for "damages" {-; )

we're having awful storms early in the season (central texas) and even had a hail storm at the beginning of april - it's definatily weirder out there.

I't's like 2005 all over again. Wildfires all over, freak thunderstorms, Early tropical storms, and the temp hitting 90 degrees one day at the end of April here on the gulf coast. Hell, after Katrina and Rita, we even had wildfires here! Deja Vu!!!

Fred the Cat gave you away (smile), just enjoy the remainder of your stay and be safe.

We have had fires here in the South for a few days now and I for one am very glade to see a little rain, though it only touched a few areas here.

Sorry to hear about the surfer that met his death... I thought the weather was to bad for such things.

Surfers are a mad lot. The bigger the surf the better they like it. I admire them but anyone who thinks that the ocean can be treated lightly is a fool.

Take care!

It is my perception that Florida won't be very inhabitable in another fifty years. Nature will have reclaimed most of it.

And rightfully so I dare say. Long live the turtles, humans can live somewhere else.

Dear Patricia,
What a sad trip. I am sure the death of that surfer was heart breaking. Then to see that wild weather and those fires, and worrying about the turtles, it is just too much. I hope Florida calms down a bit for the rest of the year, but that is asking a lot. Between Florida and California, things are off to a frightening start, not to mention those tornadoes in Kansas. You take care and I am sending a big hug your way.
