Sensibility vs. Stubbornness

So far six Republican senators have spoken out against continuing to dig that bloody hole in Iraq. Bush on the other hand seems to think that if the troops just keep on digging, pretty soon the hole will be filled. Okay, filled with dead bodies, but heck that doesn’t seem to bother the commander guy much.

With the pressure from these senators and probably others quietly, do you think bush will finally see the light and start withdrawing troops or will his stubbornness prevail and we won’t see any noticeable change in the number of our troops in Iraq?

I don't think Bush will ever see the light to withdraw the troops.

Bush won't withdraw. Ever. There will probably be over 100,000 American Soldiers and Marines in Iraq on inauguration day in 2009.

Bush will never back down and the only way he will withdraw troops, is when he sends them to Iran to begin his war there.

Are you kidding? Bush? Admit he's wrong about anything? That's what a withdrawal would imply, regardless of how fast Rove can spin it.

“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.”
from The Cheney of Oz.

About three years ago NPR interview a recently retired U.S. Army general about Iraq. I wish I could remember his name to give proper credit, but his quote was: “The first rule for getting out of a hole is to stop digging.”

I think I want this war over as much as anyone who doesn’t have a child, spouse or parent in it or headed to it. But I am afraid if we exit it as thoughtlessly and as irresponsibly as we entered it, our legacy could be a million dead Iraqis and a serious mess in all the neighboring countries. Please feel free to rip me over this opinion. I’d love to be wrong.

Because a big part of his "surge" is in overlapping tours of duty by ingoing and outgoing groups, I think he will tout a "drawdown" - which is actually just troops that were there for 3 or 4 extra months finally getting to go home.

So, he'll pretend that he's drawing down and redeploying the troops, but really he'll just be lying once again.

I'll add to that, a whole lot of dead american troops and mercs and civilians who are there doing supplies and flipping burgers.

do you think bush will finally see the light

Oh yeah, sure. Anything's possible.

Right now I'm seeing extraterrestrials that look like emaciated African children walking through my walls like they're made of liquid. They're telling me they mean no harm. They're showing me an object that looks like a four-ton cattle prod. They're saying they're going to shove it down my throat for kicks. Of course I believe them. They're totally alien to me. Why would I ever believe otherwise?

Oh, wait a sec. Now they're telling me Bush has seen the light. Do-over, do-over, do-over....

As Maureen Dowd, who I really hate to quote, wrote this morning: The president decided to do a p.r. surge to sound as if he’s acquainted with reality.

Bush is too reckless and immature to change course. He has set the world on fire, and he's someone who should have never been allowed to play with matches. I don't know how we will survive these next eighteen months.

Here is what Bush the warmonger did to an innocent little girl today:

Although his biting sarcasm in response to unfriendly questions can make members of the White House press corps grumble under their breath, President Bush got a different reaction from a 13-year-old girl who asked him about immigration during a forum in Ohio.

The Washington Times reports Jessica Hackerd was left in tears after Bush gave her a wry "yeah, thanks" in response to her query, drawing laughter from the crowd of 400 in Brecksville, Ohio Tuesday. Bush immediately began to backpedal when he saw the reaction from Hackerd, who told the Times she was crying because she is very shy and was nervous questioning the president.

You can see from the votes today to filibuster the Webb amendment that some of the vociferous GOP folks are all talk and no action. They once again failed to vote to support the troops.

he won't budge. anyone who had the audacity to ever vote for him should be fined-big fines. the profit should go to all the families of soldiers killed for no reason. yeah, that'll happen.

barring that, i think he hope we all finally DO hit the breaking point, then riot in the streets, so he can have us all killed, if there are any national guard still in the u.s. to utilize.

there, 2 instantaneous rants, from an extremely angry, saddened woman.

Sadly, I must add my voice to the overwhelming opinions expressed above. I don't agree that withdrawal now would necessarily mean a bloodbath on the streets of Baghdad. Many Sunnis are getting heartily sick of al Qaeda, and would likely unite with the Shias to drive them out. Most Sunnis only put up with al Qaeda to help rid them of the Americans. Bush will never give in unless he's forced to. Congress is tied by the corporates, so there's presently no-one to force him. However, the American peoples' voice is not irrelevant, provided they shout loudly enough.

The phone rings every day with calls from the President's and Veep's business colleagues regaling them with tales of billions grabbed and banked for virtually no work and no expense on their part save filling in some forms of lying to some generals.

They'll make little noises and assume postures but no way they're giving up the gravy train for them and theirs until they're out of office or America runs out of 18-year olds to kill. Even in the latter case, these goons will just buy teenage mercenaries from impoverished African nations.
