Plastic Contrition in a Come to Jesus Moment

Last night when we should have had the opportunity to watch Keith Olbermann, we were forced to see the infamous war twins talk about their infamous war. They both looked incredibly smaller than they did three years ago when they opted to invade the country of Iraq. Some of the same old tattered language was used but by now it rang hauntingly hallow. They had nothing new to add to their old verbiage. They reminded me of two tired old cheerleaders still cheering after the game had been lost and the fans had gone home.

The only thing of note was their come to Jesus moment when they spoke of their mistakes. The American war twin said he regretted the, "Kind of tough talk, you know, that sent the wrong signal to people. "I learned some lessons about expressing myself maybe in a little more sophisticated manner."

He wishes he hadn’t sounded like an imbecilic cowboy-ish jerk. So everything about this war is okay except a couple of unsophisticated phrases?

He went on to say that the events of torture at Abu Ghraib weren’t at all beneficial. He said, "We've been paying for that for a long period of time.” He didn’t mention how long we will pay for what is going on in the rendition prisons around the world. He didn’t mention that he issued a signing statement that will allow him to use torture if he sees fit. His real regret is that there was someone at Abu Ghraib with a damned little camera. That’s the part he really hates.

So he used the moment last night to come to his plastic Jesus and he offered him his plastic contrition. I didn’t buy it and I expect the plastic Jesus didn’t either.

Brilliant. I could not believe what he said about Abu Ghraib. "unlike Iraq, however, under Saddam, the people who committed those acts were brought to justice; they've been given a fair trial and tried and convicted..."

Oh, yeah, right.

Mr Chimpy, until you are in a cage, the perpetrators will not have been brought to justice.

I don't buy the "few bad apples" excuse either. The MP's in that prison would not have done those things unless they were directed by their superiors. The orders came from the Generals and responsibility goes right up to the the Secretary of Defense. None of them have been held responsible. At the same time the enlisted people trying to use the Nuremberg defense doesn't fly either. When I was an enlisted man we were taught that you could refuse to follow an unlawful order.

I missed that. When I see his face, I change the channel, I'm afraid.

As a matter of fact I just did it again about five minutes ago.

Have a good weekend.

The act is old and tired, much like an old time comedian who doesn't have any new material but keeps doing the old act, because that's all he knows how to do. Any utterances of "regret" from the Preznut ring just as hollow as most of the other buzzwords: compassionate conservative, uniter not a divider, no child left behind, just to name a few of the greatest hits.

That line about cheerleaders cheering after the game is lost, that's a really great image.

Agree with the cheerleaders... but sad that this war was/is their game, and our soldiers were and are still are their pawns on the board.

Plastic jesus made me think of this little ditty from my younger days

I don't care if it rains or freezes
long as I have magnetic jesus
sitting on the dashboard of my car

magnetic jesus is pink and pleasant
glows in the dark
it is flourescent

sorry folks, I just can't remember that last line. Anyone remember this one?

I have a hard time thinking anything that Bu$hCo does is any good.

At least C-SPAN is still showing that smirky smile after he says he regrets getting caught about Abu Ghraib. The other TV channels are cutting that part of the clip. Reporters in the room knew beyond a doubt that this was rehearsed contrition. Unfortunately, the general American public might believe he's really, really sorry. (barf)

As epiphanies go, it could have used some work. Like having both of them drop to their knees and beg forgiveness.

Man. When you beg the plastic Jesus for forgiveness and even he refuses to hear your plea, you are sooo in deep trouble...

Get yourself a sweet madonna
Dressed in rhinestone, settin' on a
Pedestal of Abalone Shells
Goin' 90, I ain't scared
Cause I got the Virgin Mary
Assuring me that I won't go to hell

As to why anyone would buy their shit is beyond me...but they have a faithful batch of nutjobs still thinking it was the "right thing to do" and "worth it." Frankly, the RIO in Iraq proves that it has never been either.

I'd like to stick a plastic fork up his incompetent dark haven! Of course, we're talking about a large haven, so maybe it'd be better to stick his plastic Jesus in his sun don't shine!

PoP, you said,

'He went on to say that the events of torture at Abu Ghraib weren’t at all beneficial. He said, "We've been paying for that for a long period of time”.'

I think the president has a guilty conscience about Abu Ghraib and his role in allowing torture. He's concerned now about his legacies, and one will be America's use of torture to fight his holy war. Standing there last night you knew his wheels were grinding to come up with some mistakes. And, if all he could come up with was poor communication style and Abu Ghraib you know his role in torture is on his mind, whether due to cameras or his decisions.

Glad you got your real estate on the move again. Have a great three day weekend.

Now P.O.P., would that plastic Jesus be a bobblehead Jesus, or just a plain 'ole regular plastic Jesus w/ "Made in Taiwan" stamped on his booty?
Dubya strikes me as a bobblehead kind of Jesus guy. While confessing his "misteps" (cause Lord knows he never sins, or makes mistakes) to bobblehead Jesus, our Esteemed Empty-Headed Emperor might actually believe that Jesus is simply nodding along approvingly... Jesus loves me this I know, for his bobble tells me so...

Asking forgiveness is nice; even if it is intended for a soundbite and a few more Republican votes in November. What would REALLY be nice is to have a President with enough brains to not do this B.S. in the first place!! His own Father counseled him "to back off and think this thing through", that being Iraq. And George (what is this thing he said of a scanner at a supermarket)the first wasn't exactly rocket scientist material by far! When an idiot tells you it's wrong and you still don't listen.....(:

I had it on...and it was pathetic. I feel like writing a letter to Tony and telling him he was a fool to hitch his ride on Georgie's star thinking he could share in the glory. He bought it hook, line and sinker. And now he has unrelenting pressure from the Brits.

Same old, same old. Tell them what they want to hear (after how many yrs of not doing so?)
and perhpas they'll leave us alone.
What about Bush comparing "t-ism" to the Cold War?
I never thought I was too smart, but certainly do compared to him.
We need, as the Europeans have, a party system larger than "2"!
What kind of freedom is this? Something has to derail the greedy system of R & D!
Cheers!
