Trying Times for Mr. Pop
Well, it’s that time of year again. The time we head out to Mr. Pop’s family and extended family for Thanksgiving dinner. There will be four liberals at the table and about two dozen or so serious, dyed in the wool, you betcha they voted for McCain, conservative republicans.
I suggested to Mr. Pop that I volunteer to say grace this year and close with, We thank you god for Obama being our next president. Mr. Pop didn’t think too much of that idea, even though he did laugh when he thought about it.
After my unfortunate utterance of the “F” bomb at the dining table two Thanksgivings ago, I guess I better just keep my mouth shut and smile a lot. When I made that infamous verbal gaffe, it was because I had dropped some food on my sister in law’s beautiful tablecloth. After I said the word and the earth stood silently still for a few moments, I profusely apologized for both the word and the spill.
I don’t know how this is going to be received by the family, but Mr. Pop and I are going to request that anyone who is planning to give us a gift for Christmas, take that money and instead, buy food to donate to their local food pantry. Hopefully all will agree and in lieu of opening gifts we will all open our hearts this especially difficult and trying holiday season.
We are off today and we will be back sometime Friday. As it happens every year, this will be an interesting few days. Wish Mr. Pop luck as he tries his level best to keep peace on earth and goodwill toward wife and family. He’ll have his work cut out for him.
Happy Thanksgiving to each and every one of you and your friends and your family too, from the Pop family and of course, Fred the Cat.
See you guys back here maybe over the weekend and if not, Monday for sure.

Happy Turkey to all the POPs. Fortunately, I don't have to put up with my wingnut brother in law this holiday. The fool doesn't know how close he's come to needing reconstructive facial surgery. Peace be with you.
Give Fred a little scratching for me too.
Have a great Thanksgiving and I hope it goes well. These times with families can be a challenge.
I love your Christmas idea - excellent and soon to be copied here.
And your grace sounds fine to me but I can see why Mr PoP might not want you to say it!
Wishing you peace.
Here is an alternate grace for you.
Dear great spirit thank you for bringing this family together for this wonderful celebration of your bounty.
We hope you are looking over us this day since we think we cooking everything enough but we know Shrub's USDA and FDA didn't inspect it thoroughly if at all.
We also want to thank you for bringing Barack Obama to our country and even though he is probably a terrorist and a Muslim he will be so much better that our current idiot and chief we are surely blessed.
Bless this factory farmed turkey and foreign grown food to the nourishment of our spirits and please great spirit help us heal this country quickly from the eight years of GOP control.
Amen.
Be careful out there.
Don't slaughter anyone. I'd imagine blogging from the big house would be more difficult.
happy thanksgiving and good luck!
i know it must have been a very difficult moment for you last year, but i can't help being amused by my imagined picture of the other diners.
i guess you won't be asking how their 401ks and iras have done since then.
nice idea about gifts.
i always lean toward robert louis stevenson's "family prayer."
it touches all the bases. we'll get into the politics and stuff after the pie is served.
try hitting them with slogans like
"vote republican, it's easier than thinking"
or
"those who do not remember the past are doomed to keep voting republican."
Happy Thanksgiving, safe travels and may you find that they surprise you with their willingness to go along with your Christmas idea!
Have a safe trip. Don't get into any policital disputes! Great idea about the food bank. Be safe!
Blessings!
Well Happy Thanksgiving even to your in laws who might have voted for McCain :}
btw, I've been rather surprised to learn just how many "conservatives" voted for Obama.
Don't you hate it when the "f" bomb drops? Oh goodness.
Good luck with the turkey feast!
Luf, Us
Love the prayer Fallenmonk!
(still laughing at the thought of your f-bomb dropping on the table)
Good luck with the in-laws, PoP, and remember--drinking heavily and sitting in front of the TV is a safe choice for non-confrontation. That's what I do.
Nuzzle Fred for me!
Happy thanksgiving, POP!
Hope you and yours have a good day and avoid politics.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, Mr. Pop, and Fred. One of the things I'm thankful for are the many Internet bloggers whose collective voice makes for a more interesting world to live in.
have a wonderful holiday.......
see you when you get back
happy turkey day (and i'm totally rooting for you to say grace this year)!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'm sure all will go well!
Happy Thanksgiving to the entire PoP family ;o)
Happy Thanksgiving.
I stayed away from people today for the most part. It was a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Fred the Cat is one fortunate feline, he lives with two gems.
Hope you enjoyed your holiday Pop and that there were no spills on tablecloths and no F-bombs tossed.
Hope you and Mr. Pop had a good Thanksgivings with as little stress as possible under the circumstances.
The Food Pantry idea is perfect and so very needed right now.
